  2. PC MACSYMA« 417.125 delta 2 DEMONSTRATION DISKETTE
  3.  
  4. This demonstration diskette runs on 80386 and 80486 PC's
  5. running DOS 5.0 or higher and MS-Windows 3.1.  The
  6. mathematical features shown here are common to versions
  7. of Macsyma on all platforms.  The on-line help and graphics
  8. features are similar to those in other versions of Macsyma.
  9. In addition to this README.TXT file, the demonstration
  10. diskette contains an installation file INSTALL.EXE and the
  11. file MACSDEMO.EXE which is a self-extracting archive.

  13. INSTALLING THE MACSYMA DEMONSTRATION DISKETTE
  14.  
  15. This demonstration will occupy 4 megabytes on your hard
  16. disk drive, and needs 5 megabytes of space temporarily
  17. while it is installing.  To install the demonstration,
  18. go to the Program Manager and click on FILE|RUN.  Type
  19. A:\INSTALL (or B:\INSTALL, depending on which floppy disk
  20. drive you use).  INSTALL creates a subdirectory with a
  21. path and name of your choice (default c:\MACSDEMO),
  22. copies the file MACSDEMO.EXE to that directory, then
  23. expands and finally deletes this file from your hard disk. 
  24. If you consent, the installation program creates a program
  25. group called "Macsyma Demo" with program items (icons)
  26. "Macsyma mathdemo" and "Macsyma plotdemo." 
  27.  
  28. When MACSDEMO.EXE runs, it unpacks about 110 files from
  29. a self-extracting archive.  The type of each resulting
  30. file is indicated by its extension.

  32. .exe - executable file.  There are two of them:
  33.        MATHDEMO.EXE and PLOTDEMO.EXE.
  34. .out - Macsyma output file.  These files contain scripts
  35.        of demonstration calculations which were run using
  36.        Macsyma.  MATHDEMO.EXE can play back these files to
  37.        simulate a Macsyma computation session.
  38. .plt - Macsyma plot file.  These files contain scientific
  39.        graphics created by Macsyma.  PLOTDEMO.EXE can view
  40.        these files.
  41. .dll - A utility file which is needed to run the
  42.        demonstrations.
  43. .hlp - A help system file which you need not access directly.
  44. .txt - A text file, such as this README.TXT file.

  46. USING THE MACSYMA DEMONSTRATION DISKETTE
  47.  
  48. The MATHDEMO.EXE package demonstrates sample mathematical
  49. computational sessions.  Start this program either by
  50. clicking on the "Macsyma mathdemo" icon or on the filename
  51. MATHDEMO.EXE in your file system under Windows. With your
  52. mouse, select the menu item FILE|PLAYBACK-DEMO to select
  53. a demonstration file.  All mathematical demonstration files
  54. have the filename extension ".out".  The MATHDEMO window
  55. also includes all the on-line help facilities in Macsyma,
  56. except that executable examples cannot be executed.  You
  57. may browse through the help menus at the top of the window,
  58. or open the hypertext help system by clicking on HELP on
  59. the top menu bar.

  61. The PLOTDEMO.EXE package demonstrates sample plots
  62. generated by Macsyma.  Start this program either by clicking
  63. on the "Macsyma plotdemo" icon or on the filename
  64. PLOTDEMO.EXE in your file system under Windows. To select a
  65. plot, click with your mouse on the menu item FILE|OPEN, and
  66. select a file.  All sample plots have the filename
  67. extension ".plt".  You can adjust the plot view and color
  68. rendering from the menus in the plot window, and obtain
  69. on-line help by clicking on HELP in the menu bar at the top
  70. of the screen.

  72. You can export mathematical expressions and graphics from
  73. the Macsyma demonstrations to any Windows word processor,
  74. in the form of Windows metafiles.

  76. Among the files extracted from MACSDEMO.EXE are these text

  80. Macsyma demonstration, and how to use it.  This file also
  81. lists hardware and software requirements for running PC
  82. Macsyma.
